Dr Karim Khan, Sports Medicine Doctor now based in Vancouver Canada, gave the Annual FC Better Sports Medicine lecture last Thursday in Melbourne. His powerful message is that inactivity is the biggest cause of death in our modern society. This Inactivity is more destructive that Smoking, Obesity and Diabetes PUT together.
His message to us, as members of the Health industry, is to advise our patients / clients and our communities that ACTIVITY IS MEDICINE in order to cultivate physical and mental health and to avoid the destructive “force” that INACTIVITY has on our bodies.
So how much Physical activity is enough? Karim showed that it is best to keep this message clear and not to over-complicate this point.
So 1. ANY physical activity is OK.
2. The research shows that 30mins of Physical activity per day gives a 30% reduction in your risk of death from causes such as cardio-vascular failure and 60 mins per day gives close to 50% reduction. This time may sound alot to many people but when broken down to either 2 or 4 X 15 minute segments per day, it become achievable.
