Dr Karim Khan Delivers Important Message for All Health Practitioners
Dr Karim Khan, Sports Medicine Doctor now based in Vancouver Canada, gave the Annual FC Better Sports Medicine lecture last Thursday in Melbourne. His powerful message is that inactivity is the biggest cause of death in our modern society. This Inactivity is more destructive that Smoking, Obesity and Diabetes PUT together.
His message to us, as members of the Health industry, is to advise our patients / clients and our communities that ACTIVITY IS MEDICINE in order to cultivate physical and mental health and to avoid the destructive “force” that INACTIVITY has on our bodies.
So how much Physical activity is enough? Karim showed that it is best to keep this message clear and not to over-complicate this point.
So 1. ANY physical activity is OK.
2. The research shows that 30mins of Physical activity per day gives a 30% reduction in your risk of death from causes such as cardio-vascular failure and 60 mins per day gives close to 50% reduction. This time may sound alot to many people but when broken down to either 2 or 4 X 15 minute segments per day, it become achievable.

Must see Video on Hip Joint Replacement
The Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) 4 Corners Program “Joint Reaction” is a must watch program for any health professional. The bottom line is that a specific type of metal on metal hip replacement device is failing and creating metal toxicity in these patient.
The ….. “metal on metal technology, made partly from cobalt and chromium, (was) sold originally to doctors and patients as a big leap forward in joint replacement.
By last year, 93,000 people worldwide had had hip replacement surgery to implant this type of device. Five thousand five hundred of them were in Australia. Most have all now been alerted that their device is suspect, but many had already found out the hard way that something was badly wrong.
The question is, should the manufacturer and the medical profession have responded quicker when the alarm bells began to ring? And should the government regulator in Australia have given the green light to these cobalt and chromium devices without any clinical trials? Those questions will now be dealt with in court, and possibly in the Parliament”
Source: Transcript from 4 Corners Joint Reaction program.
The message to all practitioners is that when patients presents with hip pain or systemic illness post metal on metal hip replacement, they should be advised to see their doctor for a blood test to assess levels of cobalt and chromium present in their bodies. If the levels are high it may indicate break down of the metal articulating surfaces.

AAMT & ATMS Conferences very Successful Events
Great to see so many great practitioners at the AAMT & ATMS Conferences in Cairns (QLD) and Sydney (NSW) respectively.
It was so pleasing to see nearly 300 practitioners in Cairns to support the Far North Queensland region after being hit by cyclone Yasi’s destruction.
Cairns itself and all the beautiful region to the north (Pt Douglas and the Daintree / Cape Tribulation regions) were unaffected but so many people have cancelled holidays in the region thinking the worst. The region now needs support so if you need a holiday break, think of the Far North Queensland area.
I had a very busy but thoroughly enjoyable time at the conference. (300 in my Plenary session on Tendinopathy and 74 participants in each of my 2 “Lateral Elbow Pain” workshops). It is an absolute pleasure to be part of the wonderful community of Massage Therapists we have here in Australia.
A few days at home then off to Sydney for the ATMS conference at Olympic Park. I co-presented two workshops with Dentist Robert Gammal on “The Relationship between Dental Health & Soft Tissue Structures”
During the conference I had the great fortune to hear many of the great speakers, it was an exceptionally uplifting event.
